Abstract

This study examines the audience's meaning of the single mother Heroism in the film "Banyu", using a qualitative method with an interpretive paradigm and Stuart Hall's reception analysis theory approach, namely dominant hegemony, negotiation, and opposition based on encoding-decoding. The film "Banyu" was released in 2018, re-uploaded on the youtube channel August 23, 2020. The 21-minute film was directed by Richard Suwae. The author chooses members of UKM Graha Sinema UNTAG Surabaya as informants who interpret media messages. The findings through in-depth interviews and documentation of informants argue that in the film "Banyu" there are five informants who are included in the dominant hegemony category, while no informants are included in the negotiation category, and there is only one informant who is in the opposition category. Based on the findings as above, the majority of informants support that the Banyu film does contain elements of Heroism which is reflected in a single mother. Banyu films also contain many moral messages related to the struggle of single mothers shown in the film, while on the other hand there are those who reject the message or do not accept the role of single mothers as family heroes.
