Abstract

This study aims to determine the role in Indonesia of CNN Indonesia and Tempo.com in
framing the news of the Taliban Militia Coup Against the Afghan Government. In this study,
the theory used is the framing approach of William A.Gamson's model with a qualitative
method approach. The discussion of Robert N. Entman's model framing is about the selection
of issues and the protrusion of issues. The definition of the Gamson model lies in the
constructivist approach by looking at the representation of media – news, consisting of
interpretive packages that contain certain meaning constructions. The advantage that can be
seen in this framing analysis is that it can be seen through hackett's (1984) statement, that
nowadays researchers should change the direction of their focus on the media. The results of
this study are (1) CNN Indonesia and Tempo.com frame the news of the coup as an
international problem and do not focus too much on religion even though Ta;iban is closely
related to extremist Islamist groups (2) CNN Indonesia is more dominant in highlighting the
role of the United States as a party that has more responsibility for conflicts that occur with
a greater number of news (3) Tempo.com more neutral and shows the role of various countries
in responding the conflict that took place in Afghanistan. (4) The two media do not exaggerate
the issues that occurred and present the news according to the developments that occurred so
as not to cause other conjectures from readers.
